Dignity In Care Award for Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals
Monday, 07 April 2008
Using UK Medical’s Pleurx Catheters, the GI Radiology team at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust were granted first prize for ‘Dignity in Care’ in the Health and Social Care Awards.
The team in Hull and East Yorkshire were celebrated for the provision of long-term, home-based drainage of ascites in terminally ill patients.
The service aims to improve quality of life for patients who are able to manage their symptoms at home, rather than having to be admitted to hospital when their discomfort becomes intolerable.
UK Medical’s Pleurx Catheter is inserted into a patient’s peritoneal cavity prior to discharge and they can then manage drainage at home, either on their own or with the support of a District Nurse.
UK Medical’s team provide training in the use of the Pleurx system to medical staff in primary and secondary care. Ian Aaron, Managing Director, highlighted the benefits of the product in terms of achieving enhanced palliative care whilst reducing costs and hospital admissions. “Use of the Pleurx Catheter is now increasing nationwide, the result being a significant reduction in hospital admissions. The use of this catheter dramatically improves the quality of life of cancer patients and we are delighted to see another Award for the services provided by our clients”.
UK Medical specialises in premium quality, interventional, implantable and sophisticated single-use products, covering: Biopsy, Cath Lab, Drainage, Obs & Gynae, Stenting, Surgery and Vertebroplasty.
